چکیده

We consider mechanisms for online deadline-aware scheduling in large computing clusters. Batch jobs that run on such clusters often require guarantees on their completion time (i.e., deadlines). However, most existing scheduling systems implement fair-share resource allocation between users, an approach that ignores heterogeneity in job requirements and may cause deadlines to be missed. In our framework, jobs arrive dynamically and are characterized by their value and total resource demand (or estimation thereof), along with their reported deadlines. The scheduler’s objective is to maximize the aggregate value of jobs completed by their deadlines. We circumvent known lower bounds for this problem by assuming that the input has slack, meaning that any job could be delayed and still finish by its deadline. Under the slackness assumption, we design a preemptive scheduler with a constant-factor worst-case performance guarantee. Along the way, we pay close attention to practical aspects, such as runtime efficiency, data locality and demand uncertainty. We evaluate the algorithm via simulations over real job traces taken from a large production cluster, and show that its actual performance is significantly better than other heuristics used in practice. We then extend our framework to handle provider commitments: the requirement that jobs admitted to service must be executed until completion. We prove that no algorithm can obtain worst-case guarantees when enforcing the commitment decision to the job arrival time. Nevertheless, we design efficient heuristics that commit on job admission, in the spirit of our basic algorithm. We show empirically that these heuristics perform just as well as (or better than) the original algorithm. Finally, we discuss how our scheduling framework can be used to design truthful scheduling mechanisms, motivated by applications to commercial public cloud offerings. ∗Work supported in part by the Technion-Microsoft Electronic Commerce Research Center, and by ISF grant 954/11. Improved Competitive Analysis of Online Scheduling Deadline-Sensitive Jobs

We consider the following scheduling problem. There is a single machine and the jobs will arrive for completion online. Each job j is preemptive and, upon its arrival at time aj , its other characteristics are immediately revealed to the machine: the deadline dj , the workload Dj and the value vj . The objective is to maximize the aggregate value of jobs completed by their deadlines. Using the ...

A Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study

This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...

Mixed Criteria Packet Scheduling

Packet scheduling in networks with quality of service constraints has been extensively studied as a single criterion scheduling problem. The assumption underlying single criterion packet scheduling is that the value of all packets can be normalized to a single scale, even in cases when packets have different requirements. We demonstrate that this approach can lead to inefficient utilization of ...

Online Scheduling of Jobs for D-benevolent instances On Identical Machines

We consider online scheduling of jobs with specic release time on m identical machines. Each job has a weight and a size; the goal is maximizing total weight of completed jobs. At release time of a job it must immediately be scheduled on a machine or it will be rejected. It is also allowed during execution of a job to preempt it; however, it will be lost and only weight of completed jobs contri...

Online Weighted Flow Time and Deadline Scheduling

In this paper we study some aspects of weighted flow time. We first show that the online algorithm Highest Density First is an O(1)-speed O(1)-approximation algorithm for P |ri ,pmtn| ∑ wiFi . We then consider a related Deadline Scheduling Problem that involves minimizing the weight of the jobs unfinished by some unknown deadline D on a uniprocessor. We show that any c-competitive online algori...

Online scheduling of weighted equal-length jobs with hard deadlines on parallel machines

We consider the problem of scheduling a maximum profit selection of equal length jobs on m identical machines. Jobs arrive online over time and the goal is to determine a non-preemptive schedule which maximizes the total profit of the scheduled jobs. Let the common processing requirement of the jobs be p > 0. For each job ji, i = 1, . . . , n we are given a release time ri (at which the job bec...
